The Republican National Committee raised $6 million in April, though it’s still $19 million in debt, a spokesman said.

That’s an improvement since January, when Chairman Reince Priebus took over the committee with $24 million in debt, according to Sean Spicer, the RNC communications director. The committee paid off $1 million of that debt in April, he said.

“He personally joined in the effort by making a $5,000 personal contribution,” Spicer said of Priebus.

The RNC has about $5 million cash on hand, he said.

Spicer said the committee’s “priority has been restoring relationships with donors who had left the committee in past cycles” to bring down the RNC’s debt.

Priebus’s predecessor, former RNC chairman Michael Steele, ran for re-election in January but lost after complaints about his financial stewardship of the committee.
