Dow falls 279 points on fears about economy

A growing pessimism about the American economy led to the biggest one-day drop in the stock market since last August.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day on Wednesday down 279.12 points, or 2.2%, to 12,290.67.

The newest report causing concern is the ISM manufacturing index, released Wednesday morning, which showed that manufacturing growth has slowed to its lowest rate since 2009, in part due to rising commodity prices.
