House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican, offered advice to the scandal-embroiled Rep. Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat, saying he should “come clean” on his ongoing lewd photograph scandal.

The scandal, dubbed #Weinergate online, started when a photograph of a man’s penis underneath gray boxer-briefs was posted on Weiner’s official verified Twitter account Friday night. Weiner has continually evaded questions about the lewd photo, and won’t say whether it’s him in the photo.

He first claimed his Twitter and Facebook accounts were “hacked,” which led to the lewd photo’s posting, but has since began referring to it as a “prank.”

“My advice would be to come clean and clear it up,” Cantor said in an appearance on Fox News. “Again, perhaps he’s trying, but I know there’s a lot of explaining going on but without a lot of clarity. The American people are right in saying they don’t have tolerance for this repeated kind of activity going on surrounding their elected leaders.”

Cantor said he’s “really saddened for his [Weiner’s] wife. I think they’ve only been married for a short time.”

Huma Abedin, Weiner’s wife, has remained mum on Weinergate news.

Cantor’s office and Speaker John Boehner’s office wouldn’t respond to The Daily Caller’s requests as to whether GOP House leadership will seek an Ethics Committee investigation into Weiner’s scandal.
