Despite yesterday’s mass exodus, some staffers are sticking by Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, Gingrich’s Georgia campaign chairman, said today he will never give Gingrich up, never let him down.

“Newt Gingrich is my friend and I support his campaign for the presidency,” Deal said in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “When the going gets rough, I don’t cut and run on my friends. Whether he stays in the race is his decision, not mine, and I will support whatever decision he makes.”

Deal’s support comes a day after Gingrich’s campaign imploded, with almost all of his key staffers resigning over what Gingrich called a “strategic disagreement” over how to run a campaign. Gingrich said earlier today that he will continue to campaign “very intensely.”

Gingrich was a heavy supporter of Deal’s successful 2010 campaign for governor.
