“The Office” star Rainn Wilson gets political on his Twitter feed every once in a while. But he’s never offered up his services as a campaign manager. Until now.

Wilson, who plays the eccentric (to put it mildly) Dwight K. Shrute on the NBC series must have heard about Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s campaign woes. Earlier this month, most of Gingrich’s top campaign staff quit and, just over a week ago, his finance team left the campaign as well. (APNewsBreak: Gingrich campaign finance team quits)

Rainn Wilson to the rescue! “Dear @NewtGingrich: because of the many Newt/Shrute rhyme options, I humbly offer my services as your new campaign manager,” the actor tweeted yesterday.

Gingrich must be an “Office” fan, because he responded: “@rainnwilson We have a campaign manager. What about assistant TO the campaign manager?” The line is a reference to a long-running joke on the show.
