Justin Bieber is using his popularity to alert teens to the dangers of texting and driving.  As a part of a new initiative, he is campaigning for a mobile-phone app that would prevent cell phone users from texting or emailing while traveling at speeds higher than 10 miles per hour.

“We need to change the attitudes in our society toward texting and driving and I am making it one of my personal goals to make this happen,” the Canadian pop star has said.

Bieber has already begun to support this cause with a “Don’t Text and Drive” banner at his performances.

He will be teaming up with organizations which have already made texting and driving a priority, including PhoneGuard Inc. and the Remember Alex Brown Foundation.

With such a large fan base, the message from this newly licensed 17-year-old has the potential to reach millions. (Justin Bieber egg thrower arrested, Bieber interviews bullied Casey Heynes)

The announcement was timed to come with the closure of the 405 Freeway — a major road in Los Angeles, Ca. — for a bridge-demolition project popularly dubbed “Carmageddon.”
