It’s been a big week for 26-year-old superstar Katy Perry. The ultimate California girl landed an impressive nine nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, crushing fellow pop princesses Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. The fashion-forward diva and the old-school former teeny-bopper nabbed only three and two nominations respectively. Perry leads the pack in all of the major categories, including Video of the Year and Best Pop Video.

Perry’s nominations are simply the cherry on top of a phenomenal year. The eccentric pop star’s wildly successful album, “Teenage Dream,” produced a series of infectious pop hits that dominated the Billboard charts. The disc produced an astounding five number one singles and earned her two Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Last fall, the songstress sold out major arenas around the globe when she embarked on a massive, 122-city world tour that grossed more than $26 million dollars.

In addition to ruling the radio, Perry’s outrageous hair and attire have made her a legitimate style icon. Although she’s 26 years old and a newlywed, she’s not too old to wear glittery tutus or dye her naturally blond locks every color from jet black to electric blue. On Thursday the pop princess returned to her roots and debuted a golden blond ‘do while discussing her VMA nominations on MTV News. Whether it’s a new hair color or a bra that shoots whip cream, Perry always finds a way to keep fans … um … interested.

Take a look at some shots from the candy-coated pop star’s very busy year.
