Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips is defending those in Congress who refuse to support a debt-ceiling increase, saying Speaker of the House John Boehner “is not listening to those who elected him.”

Phillips, whose Tennessee-based organization hosted the well-publicized Tea Party Convention in Nashville last year, took his arguments to the opinion page of the Washington Post on Thursday. (RELATED: Mitch Daniels endorses Boehner proposal)

“Unfortunately,” Phillips writes, “Boehner is not listening to those who elected him and is now pushing a plan with almost nonexistent budget cuts.

“Average Americans understand that the federal government is bloated. The government funds too many wasteful programs. There are too many programs and spending bills that exist only to help get senators or representatives reelected.”

Phillips also said the Tea Party movement “understands that if we allow Congress to borrow more money or raise taxes, all we are doing is funding the endless expansion of government.”
