Irene to pummel weekend sports schedules

A day after an earthquake in Virginia shook up qualifying matches and preparation, the U.S. Open tennis tournament is facing another blow from Mother Nature. Hurricane Irene, churning in the Atlantic Ocean, could do damage this weekend.

Other sports already are adjusting to the storm. The Florida Marlins played a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, moving up Thursday’s game in Miami to avoid Irene.
