Tropical storm Irene floods New York

Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm Sunday morning as it made landfall over New York’s Coney Island with winds clocking 65 mph.

The real worry now for officials is major flooding in New York City and the surrounding region. The storm pushed a 3 1/2-foot surge of water into New York Harbor and forecasters said the peak could be twice as tall later in the morning.
