KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Security agents detained a man and shut down one of three terminals at the main airport in Kansas City after a suspicious device was detected inside a carry-on bag on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The device was found about 9:30 a.m. at the Southwest Airlines checkpoint at Kansas City International Airport, Aviation Department spokesman Joe McBride said.
The man was detained after he refused to allow transportation security agents to examine something in his bag, Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said.
FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the suspicious package was X-rayed and no explosive material was found. The package was “disrupted in such a way to preserve” evidence by the bomb squad, she said. She declined to say what was in the bag.
TSA released a statement saying the area around the checkpoint was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” and Patton said the terminal remained closed Sunday afternoon. She said the man was in the custody of airport security.
Several TSA officials did not respond to calls requesting more details Sunday.
Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, referred questions to the TSA.
Mainz said other than delays caused by closing the checkpoint for a few hours, no flights were affected.
