One of the hallmarks of modern campaigning is the search for the viral video — a web ad so funny, striking or downright odd that it reaches a much larger audience than it otherwise would.

Former Texas solicitor general and Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Ted Cruz might have found his. “Some creatures defy explanation, elusive objects of great mystery,” intones the narrator in Cruz’s 1950s-style horror movie-inspired new ad. A cartoon chubacabra and sasquatch are then seen stalking the woods. According to the ad, both have been spotted in Texas more than Cruz’s rival for the Republican nomination, Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst.

Though perhaps not as self-consciously strange, the ad, called “Ducking Dewhurst,” is in many way a direct descendant of Carly Fiorina’s infamous “Demon Sheep” ad from last year. That video received national attention, and Fiorina went on to win her campaign.
