It was a Hollywood ending for one unlucky victim.

On Tuesday afternoon, two female hikers made a gruesome discovery underneath the legendary Hollywood sign when they found a plastic bag containing a male’s severed head, Reuters reported.

The women were hiking with nine dogs in the Hollywood Hills, a popular hiking area, when they noticed two dogs playing with an object.

“Two dogs were playing with it, and that’s when the dog walkers looked closer and realized it was a human head,” Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Karen Rayner told Reuters.

Police believed the head had not been there for very long. Cadaver dogs were called to the scene to search for other human remains, but the search was called off at dusk.

The iconic sign above Los Angeles originally read “Hollywoodland” and was created in 1923. The word “land” deteriorated in the late 1940s and the remaining sign was restored in 1978.

The sign was almost torn down in 2010, but Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and other philanthropists each donated $1 million to maintain the sign.
