In a radio interview Thursday morning, Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown claimed he has had meetings with “kings and queens.”

Brown made the comments in response to critics who claim that his campaign does not focus on serious issues. The Republican senator said that he was, in fact, a serious candidate who is tackling “issues” and having meetings with “kings and queens.”

“Each and every day that I’ve been a United States senator, I’ve been discussing issues, meeting on issues, in secret meetings and with kings and queens and prime ministers and business leaders and military leaders, talking, voting, working on issues every single day.”

Democrats widely mocked the statements, and Brown spokesman Colin Reed told the Boston Globe that Brown “misspoke when he said kings and queens.”

Instead, “Brown was speaking generally about private meetings he has had with foreign and domestic leaders.”

The statements come as the race between Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren heats up.
