Usually, presidential candidates dance around accusations of lying by saying stuff like, “My opponent isn’t being truthful,” and so forth. Maybe the word “lie” doesn’t poll well, I dunno. But if any one person in living memory has been proven to be a shameless liar, even for a politician, it’s Barack Obama.
And now Romney is addressing it head-on:
But just to play devil’s advocate, there’s one vital consideration about Obama that Romney has missed:
Obama means every single word he says, at least when taken individually. He speaks the absolute truth at the moment he speaks it, with no regard for anything he says before or after. Reality itself bends to his whim, and he’s never wrong, it’s never not true, because that’s simply impossible.
Here, a really smart guy once defined the process:
“The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them… To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just as long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies – all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.”
Sure, Obama is a liar, if you believe there’s such a thing as objective reality. But what kind of wingnut would fall for that?
