20th Century Fox has released the first full trailer for Ang Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s best-selling novel “Life of Pi.”

The trailer teases audiences with stunning visual effects, such as a glowing green whale leaping into the air, a fiery sunrise and beautiful shots of the Pacific Ocean. The visual effects are the work of Claudio Mirando, who previously worked on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Tron: Legacy.”

“Life of Pi” is the story of a young man named Pi Patel who ends up shipwrecked in the middle of the Pacific — with a bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a spotted hyena, a zebra with a broken leg and an orangutan — while en route from his native India to Canada. Soon, Richard Parker is Patel’s only companion.

The trailer mostly shows Patel with the tiger, but Lee does give audiences a glimpse of a struggling zebra as Patel races to escape the sinking ship full of zoo animals. It also flashes back and forth between Patel, Richard Parker and colorful scenes of India.

The film stars Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel, Irrfan Khan as an older version of Patel and Tobey Maguire as Yann Martel.

“Life of Pi” sails into theaters November 21, 2012.
