CBS is projecting that Tim Kaine will be the next senator from Virginia.

The former Democratic National Committee chairman and popular former governor beat out another former Virginia governor, George Allen, to fill retiring Sen. Jim Webb’s Senate seat.

The race was one of the most highly contested, and more outside money was spent in the Old Dominion state than in any other Senate race in the country.

Allen conceded shortly before 11 p.m. on the east coast, before the Associated Press called the race.

“Governor Kaine is going to be the kind of Senator that all Virginians can be proud of and can count on, and I congratulate him on a great victory tonight,” said Sen. Patty Murray, Chair of the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee. “The people of Virginia saw clearly that Tim Kaine has the right priorities and the passion that we need right now in the United States Senate. Governor Kaine cares passionately about early childhood education and creating opportunity for all, and I can’t wait to work with him in the United States Senate.”
