WASHINGTON — Very rarely do you see activists from the anti-war, anti-gun, left-wing Code Pink organization praise a Republican.
But on Thursday, members of the group – best known for interrupting political speeches and events while wearing pink — will make its way to the Capitol Hill office of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul to thank him for his Wednesday filibuster concerning the Obama administration’s drone policy.
“Meet us @SenRandPaul office, 208 Russell, today 1pm,” the group tweeted Thursday. “Thank him for opposition to #drones. Bring a gift. #standwithrand.”
Code Pink bills itself online as “a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end U.S. funded wars and occupations, to challenge militarism globally, and to redirect our resources into health care, education, green jobs and other life-affirming activities.”
Paul’s nearly 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor — which delayed the vote to confirm John Brennan as director of the CIA — was unusual in that it brought together unlikely allies: libertarian-leaning Republicans, establishment Republicans, Democrats and even left-wing activists like Code Pink.
After Paul started his filibuster Wednesday, Code Pink — known for heckling everyone from former President George W. Bush to former CIA director David Petraeus — tweeted a number of supportive statements:
