An endangered Asian elephant in a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was injured in a drive-by shooting in Tupelo, Miss. early Tuesday morning.

Carol, 39, was hit between her ear and shoulder while sleeping in an outdoor enclosure in front of the BanCorp South arena, reports the Washington Post.

Authorities believe the attack was intentional. “What we believe is it was a single shot fired deliberately at Carol,” said Rusty Haynes of the Tupelo police department.

The elephant is expected to recover easily in a few weeks, and a reward of $21,000 is being offered for information on who is responsible for the attack.
