Justin Bieber hopes Anne Frank ‘would have been a Belieber’

Justin Bieber on Friday discovered a tragic new wrinkle in the story of Anne Frank: that Hitler’s Holocaust robbed the young diarist of the chance to become a Justin Bieber fan.

During a visit to Amsterdam as part of his ongoing European tour, the pop sensation stopped into the Anne Frank House, now a museum, and signed the guest book. Bieber wrote, “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber,” according to the museum’s Facebook page.

Bieber’s comment has sparked minor outrage about its questionable sensitivity. The teenage Anne Frank was part of a Jewish family who hid from Nazi occupiers in an attic for two years during World War II. After the attic was discovered in August 1944, the entire family was sent to the Auschwitz death camp, where all but the father died. Anne’s diary was later published and became a classic of Holocaust literature.

Beliebers, by contrast, are what Justin Bieber’s fans call themselves on social media.

“She would’ve been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She’s an important historical figure so show some respect,” wrote one visitor on the Facebook page.

The museum spokesperson Maatje Mostart said the museum does not see anything offensive from his comment and were happy to have him, reports the AP.
