New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has already shed around 40 pounds since February, when he quietly received surgery to restrict his appetite, according to The New York Post.

The rotund Republican told The Post that it was pressure from his family — not a potential presidential bid — that led him to choose lap-band stomach surgery. The procedure involves using a device that constricts the stomach and makes the governor feel full more quickly.

“For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them,” Christie said.

The Post reports that Christie consulted with New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan — a well-known fat guy — before making the decision. Ryan reportedly lost 100 pounds after having the same operation.

Christie and Ryan shared the same surgeon, who operated on the governor on February 16.

Christie was able to keep the procedure a secret for the last 3 months.
