Former NHL Montreal Canadiens right wing Georges Laraque announced that he would vie for a seat in Canada’s House of Commons as a member of the Green Party, according to The Associated Press.

In Laraque’s 14-year NHL career, he became known as the “tough guy” as his left jab was better than his wrist shot. He registered over 1,000 minutes in the penalty box, but since his retirement Laraque has become an activist for animal rights, the environment and veganism.

“While we do not know the election date yet, I want to start campaigning now,” Laraque said in a statement. “We have a lot of work ahead of us and I want to take advantage of the summer to meet you and listen to your concerns. I’ll be in Bourassa all summer, and you can already get in touch with me now.”
