Poll: Americans want individual mandate delay too

A new survey indicates that only 12 percent of consumers believe Obamacare’s individual mandate should be enacted in 2014, according to HealthPocket, a health care reporting company.

Conducted in response to last week’s news that the Obama administration will not enforce the employer mandate until 2015, the survey also found that a full 41 percent believe that if requirements are waived for employers, they should be waived for individuals as well. Forty-seven percent of respondents are not certain.

As is, businesses will be allowed to dismiss Obamacare’s insurance mandate in 2014, but any individuals who decline to purchase health insurance will still be subject to a fine.

The administration’s decision to delay the mandate for employers with over 50 workers to supply health coverage has been blasted by opponents of the law. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said “I never thought I’d see the day when the White House, this president, came down on the side of big business, but left the American people out in the cold as far as this health care mandate is concerned,” according to the New York Times.

The GOP is seeking to capitalize on this public sentiment. The Hill reported that House Republicans are considering a vote to put off the individual mandate until 2015 along with requirements for employers. “We’re going to have another vote,” House Speaker John Boehner warned at a press conference Tuesday, “count on it.”

Along with Cantor, Boehner lambasted the delays. “The idea that we’re going to give big businesses a break under Obamacare, but we’re going to punish small businesses and families? It’s wrong.”

The House Ways and Means Committee is holding hearings on the latest Obamacare developments.
