As Michael Wear noted at the Atlantic, next Wednesday, Evangelical Christians will show up in Washington, DC to pray for immigration reform.

In an invitation emailed on Behalf of the Evangelical Immigration Table, Galen Carey, Vice President of Government Relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, notes the anti-immigration reform movement’s checkered past, adding: “For a thorough article highlighting the connections between some of these anti-immigration groups and the population control movement, we recommend this Human Life Review article.”

And while pointing out the largely unknown liberal motives of some anti-immigration reform opponents, Carey also urged Evangelicals to pray this prayer for opponents of immigration reform:

“O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies:
Lead them and us from prejudice to truth:
deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge;
and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Bold mine.)

The prayer is inclusive and assumes we are all sinners saved by grace. But one suspects opponents of anti-immigration reform might not appreciate the notion that they need deliverance from “hatred, cruelty, and revenge.”
