Good news, Chicago: Only 6 dead, 17 wounded in weekend shootings

Could’ve been worse, right?

Chicago Sun-Times:

Six men were killed and at least 23 people — including a 6-year-old girl — were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday night.

Asked Sunday about Chicago’s reputation in the wake of another violent weekend, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he’s primarily “concerned about the safety and security of our neighborhoods, and our residents.”

He again pushed for a three-year sentencing minimum for gun crimes — calling it the “weak link” in the city’s crime-fighting strategy. And he said it’s time to replace the “code of silence” with a “moral code.”

How about banning guns, Rahm? Oh wait.

The story doesn’t mention the race of any of the victims or suspects, so presumably none of them were “white Hispanics.” Nor were any Skittles involved. That’s why Obama won’t be giving a press conference about how broken up he is, since he could’ve been one of the victims.

But we’re not supposed to talk about this:

Maybe somebody can explain how it’s “sticking it to the black community” to wonder why these shooting victims don’t matter. Why nobody will ever hold a rally for any of these shooting victims. Why none of these shooting victims will ever be on the cover of a magazine. Their deaths just aren’t that important, because they can’t be pinned on a “white guy” who happens to be exactly as white as President Barack Obama.

We can’t talk about that. Because shut up, racist.

Bill Whittle didn’t get the memo:

Update: Roger L. Simon asks, “What Do the Microscopic Rallies for Trayvon Mean?” They mean that America is racist, of course. That’s what everything means.

Update: Shelby Steele on the decline of the civil-rights establishment.

On television in recent weeks you could see black leaders from every background congealing into a chorus of umbrage and complaint. But they weren’t so much outraged at a horrible injustice as they were affronted by the disregard of their own authority. The jury effectively said to them, “You won’t call the tune here. We will work within the law.”
