WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi renewed her call for more gun control legislation on Thursday, even though there is little chance the Republican-led House of Representatives would get behind new anti-gun laws.

Referencing this week’s shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. that left more than a dozen dead, the Democratic minority leader said at her weekly Capitol news conference: “Our commitment remains the same. We must honor the memory of those lost not by moments of silence, but by using our time to pass legislation to reduce gun violence.”

Pelosi held an event on Wednesday with victims of mass shootings, including from the Newtown Elementary shooting and Aurora theater massacre.

She said Thursday about liberal efforts to restrict gun rights: “We’re not giving up on this. We’re not going away on it. … We owe those families.”

“Everyone — your children, my children, everyone — is at risk,” Pelosi said.

Speaking about the Navy Yard, she added: “Twelve people being killed by a lone gunman. We really have to act upon it.”
