Three of the perpetrators of the Nairobi Westside shopping mall attack are American — two are from Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota and the other is from Kansas City, Missouri, CNN reports.
The assault began on Saturday when between ten and fifteen members of Al-Shabaab, an Islamic fundamentalist group with ties to Al-Qaida, entered the mall with assault rifles and grenades.
Reports from inside the mall at the time of the initial assault say that the attackers specifically targeted non-Muslims.
The current death toll currently stands at 68. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed that retribution will be swift.
“They shall not get away with their despicable, beastly acts,” Kenyatta said. “Like the cowardly perpetrators now cornered in the building, we will punish the masterminds swiftly and indeed very painfully.”
According to reports form Kenya, Kenyatta’s nephew was killed in the attack, along with his nephew’s fiancé. Kenyan forces are reportedly staging an assault to retake the Westside shopping center.
CNN is also reporting that a now closed Twitter account claiming to be Al-Shabaab has posted names of people it says took part in the attack. Of those named, two are Somali, and there is one each from Canada, Finland, Kenya and the United Kingdom.
