Coach Kevin Kelley of Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Ark. has an unconventional approach to football: Never punt the ball.
Kelley says that he initially studied accounting, but found himself attracted to books like “Freakanomics” and “The Tipping Point.” Those books led him to shirk conventional thinking in favor of studying pure statistics.
Those statistics suggest that there is only a marginal advantage to punting the ball. Kelley’s actions do pay off occasionally, once scoring 29 points before his opponent touched the ball. If he sees patterns of success, punting the ball may become a thing of the past for the sport.
