In an open letter to the National Institute of Health (NIH) earlier this month, legendary porn star Ron Jeremy demanded that university laboratories around the country stop scientific experiments involving the genitals of rats, mice and other animals.
The particular focus of Jeremy’s missive was John Hopkins University, which has hosted a series of experiments related to erectile dysfunction, reports Campus Reform.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a group Jeremy supports and has collaborated with in the past, has long criticized the experiments.
“You can imagine, it takes a lot to shock me, but my friends at PETA managed to pull it off recently when they told me that the National Institutes of Health is spending millions of dollars each year on sick sexual-behavior experiments on animals,” Jeremy wrote in his letter to NIH director Francis Collins.
“Experimenters cut all the skin off the penises of live mice and rats, electrically stimulated the penises for several minutes, and then injected the penises with chemicals to see whether they’d sustain an erection,” he claimed in the letter. “Afterward, the animals were killed and their penises were cut apart.”
Of course, no open letter from Ron Jeremy would be complete without a reference to his porn prowess.
“I consider myself to be a bit of an expert on sex — I’ve got more than 1,700 movies to prove it — and I know how important it is to have and enjoy it,” he added.
A spokeswoman for John Hopkins, Kim Hoppe, defended the experimentation, noting that it also involves a study of methods for improving prostate cancer surgery outcomes.
Jeremy’s previous PETA forays have included a nude appearance on a poster urging people to spay and neuter their pets. He also appeared in a video explaining his considered views on the slaughtering practices tolerated by KFC.
In his acting career, the porn star has appeared in bit parts in some mainstream movies including “The Boondock Saints” and “Detroit Rock City.” His vast multitude of pornographic film credits includes “Award-Winning Anal,” “Deep Inside Ginger Lynn,” “100 Man Semen Slam” and “Cream on My Melons.”
Adult Video News, a trade journal for the pornography industry, has ranked Jeremy number one on “The 50 Top Porn Stars of All Time,” a list which includes both and male and female actors. Jenna Jameson came in second. John Holmes placed third.
