During a recent interview in Spanish with CNN en Español’s Juan Carlos López, Senator Marco Rubio criticized the way American media has covered the crackdown of anti-government protests in Venezuela.
“[I]t’s not all media outlets,” Rubio said, “but I think some sympathize with the left. They had this romantic concept not only of Chavez but also of Fidel Castro and they don’t like when something horrible is happening in these countries and they don’t cover it.”
Concerning the lack of coverage of human rights abuses in Venezuela and Cuba, Rubio averred: “I think it’s an embarrassment. I also see a double standard in American media, in many outlets that aren’t interested in Latin America, or in this case they don’t care because they’re from the left.”
Rubio has been outspoken in his criticism of the Venezuelan regime, prompting President Nicolás Maduro to call him “loco de los locos!” — which translates to “craziest of the crazies!”
Yesterday, Rubio drew praise for his passionate speech from the Senate floor about Cuba and Venezuela.

Juan Carlos Lopez: In South Florida, it’s a hot issue with a very significant Venezuelan community. But when you watch coverage in the media and you consider the attention given to Ukraine, it is very different from how Venezuela is covered. Do you see parallels between Ukraine and Venezuela? How do you explain that Venezuela is not as important?
Rubio: I tweeted that, how interesting it is that American media ignore what happens in Venezuela. And it’s not all media outlets, but I think some sympathize with the left. They had this romantic concept not only of Chavez but also of Fidel Castro and they don’t like when something horrible is happening in these countries and they don’t cover it. They have 10,000 stories about the impact the embargo has on Cuba, a thousand every time a poll comes out saying people want trade with Cuba, but no reports on human rights abuses in Cuba or now in Venezuela. They have no reports on that, none. I think it’s an embarrassment. I also see a double standard in American media, in many outlets that aren’t interested in Latin America, or in this case they don’t care because they’re from the left. On the other hand, when we saw a constitutional change in Honduras, criticism was massive because someone from the left was removed. So there is no doubt that there is a double standard in American media, not in all outlets, about this issue of Venezuela and other leftist governments in the hemisphere.

López: En el sur de la Florida es un tema muy fuerte. Una comunidad venezolana muy importante. Pero cuando uno ve la cobertura en los medios en Estados Unidos, ve la atención que se le presentó y se le presta a lo ocurrido en Ucrania, no es la misma de lo que se le está prestando a Venezuela. ¿Ve paralelos entre Venezuela y Ucrania? ¿Cómo explica o cómo entiende que para los medios, Venezuela no tenga la misma importancia?
Rubio: Ayer yo puse ese punto en Twitter. Yo escribí en Twitter que interesante que hay medios de prensa en EE.UU. que están ignorando lo que ocurre en Venezuela. Y no son todos los medios, pero creo que hay individuos en los medios que simpatizan con la izquierda, que tenían una idea romántica no solo de Chávez, sino también de Fidel Castro y no les gusta cuando algo está ocurriendo horrible en esos países y no hacen cobertura sobre eso. Hacen 10.000 reportajes sobre el impacto que ha tenido el embargo en contra de Cuba y mil reportajes cada vez que sale una encuesta que las personas quieren abrir transacciones con Cuba. Pero no hacen ningún reportaje de los abusos de derechos humanos en Cuba y, ahora dentro de Venezuela, no hacen ningún tipo de reportaje sobre eso. Ninguno. Yo creo que es bochornoso también y creo que es una doble moral que existe en la prensa norteamericana a través de muchos medios o que no les interesa América Latina, o que en el caso este, no le interesa porque son de izquierda. Por otra parte, cuando vimos un caso de un cambio que si fue constitucional en Honduras, las críticas fueron masivas, porque ahí a quienes [sacaron del poder] eran de izquierda. Entonces no hay duda que hay una doble moral en la prensa norteamericana, en algunos medios, no en todos sobre este tema de Venezuela y otros países de izquierda en el hemisferio.
