The conservative Club for Growth on Wednesday endorsed Republican Dan Sullivan, the former Alaska attorney general, for Senate in his bid to oust Democratic Alaska Sen. Mark Begich.

“Dan Sullivan is a fiscal conservative with a stellar track record in Alaska and we strongly endorse him for the United States Senate,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola in a statement. “Dan has fought for pro-growth tax reform, taken on ObamaCare in court, and beaten back federal overreach by Obama’s EPA. In the Senate, Dan Sullivan will continue the fight for economic freedom and we can’t wait to see him help deliver for America the kinds of pro-growth policies he’s already delivered for Alaska.”

In 2010, the Club for Growth endorsed tea party favorite Joe Miller, who lost to Alaska’s senior Senator Lisa Murkowski, when she mounted a write-in campaign after losing the nomination. Miller is a candidate again this cycle, running against Sullivan in the Republican primary. Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell is also a candidate in the Republican primary.

“Liberal Democrat Senator Mark Begich has been a disaster in the United States Senate,” Chocola said. “He votes for the Obama agenda nearly every chance he gets, from ObamaCare to Obama’s failed stimulus, and he works with Harry Reid to stymie pro-growth policies from passing the Senate. But just replacing Mark Begich with another Republican is not enough – the next Republican Senate Majority must consist of the right kind of Republicans – Senators like Pat Toomey, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Mike Lee, Tom Coburn, and Rand Paul.”

Begich, a first term Senator, is considered one of the more vulnerable incumbents come November, when he faces a red-leaning electorate that is not fond of the president or his agenda.

“I am honored to receive the Club for Growth’s endorsement of my campaign for United States Senate,” Sullivan said in a statement. “The Club for Growth has been instrumental in advocating for pro-growth policies, limiting the growth of government and fighting back against the Obama administration’s overreach into the economy and lives of Americans.

“These are the values I have fought for in my long record of service to Alaska and my country. They are also the values I have emphasized throughout my campaign and they are the values I will continue to fight for as Alaska’s next United States Senator,” he went on.

“Now more than ever, it is essential that we embark on a new path forward from the failed policies of Senator Begich who has voted with President Obama 97 percent of the time,” he said. “Alaskans are ready for new leadership and I am glad to have the Club for Growth’s support.”

Club for Growth has endorsed several other Republican Senate hopefuls this cycle: Ben Sasse in Nebraska, Rep. Tom Cotton in Arkansas, and state Sen. Chris McDaniel in Mississippi.
