Dr. Ben Carson, the conservative neurosurgeon who criticized President Baracks Obama at a White House prayer breakfast last year, claimed America is now “very much like Nazi Germany.”
Carson made the incendiary remarks on Monday during an interview with Breitbart TV, after the doctor had just finished speaking at the annual New York Meeting. After mentioning that “we live in a Gestapo age” during his speech, moderator Mallory Factor asked him to elaborate.
“[We’re] very much like Nazi Germany,” he responded. “And I know you’re not supposed to say ‘Nazi Germany,’ but I don’t care about political correctness. You know, you had a government using its tools to intimidate the population.”
“We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe,” he continued. “And it’s because of the PC police, it’s because of politicians, it’s because of news. All of these things are combining to stifle people’s conversation.”
“The reason that is so horrible is because the only way you have harmony and reach a consensus is by talking,” he explained. “But if, in fact, people are afraid to talk, you never reach consensus. And instead you grow further and further apart.”
“And that’s exactly what’s happening,” he concluded, “creating a horrible schism that will destroy our nation if we don’t fix it.”
The Democratic National Committee responded to Carson’s comments in an email Wednesday afternoon. “We fact checked his claim, and here’s what we found: False,” press secretary Michael Czin wrote. “America is actually NOT like Nazi Germany.”
“However, Carson (a retired neurosurgeon & Fox News contributor) IS being tested by the Republican National Committee as a top-tier presidential candidate in 2016,” he added, noting he came in third in a CPAC poll for the 2016 presidential nomination. “Welcome to the future of the Republican Party.”
