A teacher at a private Christian K-12 school in Shreveport, La. has been suspended for allegedly calling a 12-year-old girl a “sassy slut.”
The girl’s parents say the incident happened last week at Evangel Christian Academy School (“Christ-centered excellence!), report local ABC affiliate KTBS. They also allege that other students in the class overheard the insulting statement.
The life science teacher’s six-day suspension includes full pay and benefits.
The unidentified girl’s parents say their daughter has never had discipline problems in the past. They are pretty upset.
“I’m just still numb about what happened and the disciplinary action that the school had taken,” Marteen Mitchell, the girl’s mother, told KTBS.
Mitchell said she doesn’t want the teacher fired. At the same time, she doesn’t think the six-day suspension is adequate punishment.
“No, I don’t think it was fair at all. They initially told me that she would receive one day suspension with pay,” Mitchell told the ABC station. “When I made it back to my job, I received a call from the principal that stated that the situation was serious and they wanted me to know that they would give her five additional days.”
Mitchell added that she would like to receive an apology from either the teacher or officials at Evangel Christian. However, neither has said they are sorry.
Bud Dean, the principal at Evangel Christian, declined to comment on the allegations or the suspension.
