Another day, another secret audio recording of Donald Sterling. This time, the disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner offered yet another excuse for his original anti-black screed published two weeks ago — he was just trying to get into a girl’s pants.
Radar Online published what they’re billing as a new secret recording of Sterling discussing the backlash — though it sounds a lot like a continuation of the same conversation they released yesterday.
In it, Sterling can be heard explaining to an unidentified “friend” why he made comments to his girlfriend/assistant/whatever V. Stiviano that he knew were out of line.
“I’m talking to a girl, I’m trying to have sex with her,” he said. “I’m trying to play with her. D’you know, if you’re trying to have sex with a girl — and you’re talking to her privately, you don’t think anybody’s there — you may say anything in the world! What difference does it make?”
“Then if the girl tapes it and releases it — my God, it’s awful,” Sterling added. “Who thinks that anybody’s gonna tape something?
“What the hell, I’m talking to a girl,” he said. “The girl’s black. I like her. I’m jealous that she’s with other black guys. I want her.”
“So what the hell can I, in private, tell her? I don’t want you to be with anybody?” he lamented. “I mean, am I a person? Do I have any freedom of speech?”
“I have a girl here who has black kids, and is partly black, I think, myself,” Sterling explained, referencing his conversation with Stiviano. “I love the girl! And so she’s telling me ‘You’re wrong.’ I know what I said was wrong! But I never thought the private conversation would go anywhere, out to the public.”
“I didn’t want her to bring anybody to my games because I was jealous!” he exclaimed. “I mean, I’m being honest!”
But, the Clippers owner realized, in the end it doesn’t really matter. “No one’s going to hear it but you and me,” he said, with a serious dose of unintentional irony.
The flood of secret recordings against the Clippers owner places him in real danger of becoming a sympathetic figure. Some advice to Sterling: stop talking about this issue on the phone.
