Instead of warning drivers about traffic changes ahead over the weekend, a New Jersey digital sign along State Route 49 read “Assville, Next Left.”

It’s unclear who tampered with the sign or how, but NBC Philadelphia found the sign’s control box unlocked and partially open as of Monday morning. “That’s sinful. That’s not right,” one observer told NBC Philadelphia.

The sign was corrected after residents complained, but The New Jersey Department of Transportation did not respond to questions from NBC Philadelphia about how it was tampered with. Police are not investigating the incident.

Local Mayor Rich Palombo said if it could happen in his town, it could happen in any town.

Resident Al Lund wasn’t pleased. “I come down here to escape, not put up with stuff like that,” Lund told NBC Philadelphia.
