During the deadly shooting at Seattle Pacific University on Thursday, witnesses say Jon Meis, a 26-year-old student, pepper-sprayed the gunman Aaron Ybarra as he attempted to reload the gun.

Meis put the shooter in a chokehold as other students joined in to help him stop the shooter.

Jacob Redding, a friend of Meis, told KOMO TV in Seattle: “He cares. That’s just who Jon is. So we’re all very proud of him and glad that he’s safe as well.”

When news of Meis’ upcoming wedding this month spread on social media, strangers joined in to help the hero pay for his wedding registry and honeymoon.

Inspired by Meis’ heroic actions, Jessamyn McIntyre, a Seattle-based ESPN producer, set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5,000 for the couple’s honeymoon.

By Sunday afternoon, the online campaign had raised $42,000 dollars.
