Talk about fireworks!

Sources close to President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama say Malia Obama got a car for her sweet 16 birthday Friday.

Unfortunately for the birthday girl, it may be a bitter pill to swallow because you can’t drive in Washington at 16. At least not alone. A teen can acquire a learner permit at 16. Drivers with a permit can drive, but only in the company of something 21 years or older who possesses a valid driver’s license. That driver must sit next to the driver in the front seat at all times. What’s more, there are guidelines and hours that the learner must drive within — 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday 6 a.m. – 11:59 p.m.

If Malia completes a certain number of hours and holds a provisional license for at least six months, at 17 she’ll qualify for a license. And then what — we could pass by her on the road in Georgetown?

On a brighter note, it’s possible she’ll get her own motorcade while she’s driving.

And something else: Will Michelle teach her how to drive?
