Justin Theroux is one celebrity who finds political correctness more irritating than the paparazzi.
“Political correctness has become really insidious,” he said in an interview with Elle magazine.
The “Leftovers” actor, who is engaged to Jennifer Aniston, got flack for a scene he wrote in “Tropic Thunder,” in which a character jokes with another that an actor should never go “full retard,” if he wants to win an Oscar.
Theroux and his colleagues worked hard to make sure the joke was aimed at actors who play mentally challenged people, rather than mentally challenged people themselves, Theroux said, but not surprisingly some people were unable to make that distinction and took serious offense.
“I remember being so bummed out. They literally picketed us,” he said. “It was like, ‘Really? Satire is allowed to do this!'”
Theroux is working on an entire animated series examining political correctness modeled on “All in the Family,” except conservative bigot Archie will be replaced with a liberal.
“When was the last time you were super offended?” he said in the interview. “I might be like, ‘That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!’ Or, ‘It’s not my thing.’ Or, ‘It was a stupid joke.’ But there’s such a sensitivity now.” (RELATED: Gary Oldman Slams PC Culture)
But the paparazzi? “Don’t ever engage with it. Just JKL. It was a learning curve, but it wasn’t as traumatic as you might expect,” he said. “It’s just annoying. Occasionally you’ll get a stewardess congratulating you, on, I don’t know, whatever, some three-headed baby we just had.” (RELATED: Justin Theroux Not Bothered By Paparazzi)
