Democratic congressman Eliot Engel called upon President Obama to seek legal authority for the ongoing military campaign against jihadists in northern Iraq, claiming Congress is “tired” of being ignored and explaining that “this is the way our Constitution works.”

The New York lawmaker and chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee joined Ron Johnson, his Republican colleague in the Senate, in calling for the White House to pursue a new authorization for military force in Iraq — something Johnson claimed is “long overdue.”

“I think Congress has to play an important role in this,” Engel asserted. “This is the way our Constitution works. And I think Congress is really tired of presidents just going in by themselves. So I think there has to be consultation and consent from Congress.”
