And the story just gets sadder.
On Saturday, Rep. Mark Sanford‘s (R-S.C.) significant other Maria Belen Chapur surfaced to react to the congressman’s unusually forthright Facebook post about his private life. She had forewarning that the post was coming.
Chapur spoke to the NYT from Paris, where she said the couple had just spent a week that felt like a honeymoon.
According to the report, Chapur gave Sanford an ultimatum: We get married or we’re done. She said she was tired of playing the role of “mistress.” Sanford told her he needed 24 months until one of his sons turns 18.
She declined. And he went on Facebook.
Chapur said this was about Sanford’s political ambitions: “I think I was not useful to him anymore.” In the same breath, she called him “truly the love of my life.” He says he’ll look for her in 24 months. In his Facebook post, he called her a “wonderful woman who I have always loved.”
Always. As in since 2009 when their extramarital affair began?
Somehow this doesn’t quite feel over.
