At 10 weeks pregnant, Ashley Bridges was diagnosed with bone cancer. Doctors told Bridges that she must terminate her pregnancy in order to begin her life-saving treatment, but she chose another option.
“There’s no way I could kill a healthy baby because I’m sick,” Ashley told CBS Los Angeles. Unfortunately, delaying her treatment allowed the cancer to spread, and near the end of her third trimester, Bridges was urged to deliver daughter Paisley immediately, as her illness had become terminal.
Given less than a year to live, Bridges has been spending her remaining days with her family and friends; she will be survived by a six-year-old son and a fiance in the military.
On her sister’s selfless sacrifice, Jessica Bridges only had this to add: “She’s a real-life superhero, to be honest with you.”
