Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis’ ad drawing attention to Republican opponent Greg Abbott’s use of a wheelchair has been widely denounced by those of all political stripes.

But Davis is standing firm, explaining on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reporting” that she considered the ad “fair and important.” (RELATED: Even MSNBC Won’t Defend Wendy Davis Ad)

“This is part of a larger message in this campaign about who [Greg Abbott] is,” Davis said. “I have a strong and long record of fighting for hardworking Texans, and Greg Abbott has a strong and long record of fighting for insiders at the expense of those hardworking Texans, and we felt it was a very fair and important ad to point that out.”

“And you don’t think it was a personal attack?” Mitchell asked incredulously towards the end of the interview.

“Absolutely not,” she said. “This is about who he has been as a public servant.”
