The AFL-CIO is endorsing independent Senate candidate Greg Orman against Kansas Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, National Journal reported.

The major national labor union hopes to give Orman a last-minute boost in his race against Roberts.

While Orman is running in the conservative state as an independent who will caucus with whichever party is in the majority — which has kept him from getting some Democratic money — OpenSecrets.org reports the AFL-CIO has given $5,981,441 to liberals and Democrats this cycle, and just $65,000 to Republicans and conservatives.

Despite its endorsement of Orman, the AFL-CIO won’t run television ads for him, spokesman Jeff Hauser told National Journal.

However, his campaign will now be included into the union’s extensive ground game there. This endorsement will include the labor group sending a mailer to 94,000 union members in Kansas, questioning Roberts’s residency in the state. The mailers will feature a Wizard-of-Oz-style yellow brick road leading to the U.S. Capitol, with the words “Pat Roberts, he’s not in Kansas anymore” underneath, Hauser explained to National Journal.

The AFL-CIO’s endorsement of Kansas Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Paul Davis, helped elevate his highly competitive challenge to incumbent Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

It remains to be seen whether the endorsement will prove to be a major problem for Roberts, or whether it will make Orman look like he is aligned with the Democrats.
