Democratic New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen and her husband Billy Shaheen operate a real estate investing business, of which Billy Shaheen is the principal, that caused the senator to list ten different mortgages as liabilities on her financial disclosure since she was elected to the Senate in 2008.

The Shaheens’ empire, which has netted them up to $7.9 million in assets against up to $4.2 million in liabilities, tells a veritable pictorial history of modern New England’s highway off-ramps and city side lots. As John Irving’s Rob Lowe might have said of the properties recently or currently owned by Billy Shaheen, “But our dreams escape us however vividly we imagine them. There’s only one thing you can do, keep passing the open windows.”
