The Dallas Cowboys waived defensive end Michael Sam early Tuesday afternoon.

Sam was the first openly gay player in the NFL, after being drafted by the St. Louis Rams in last year’s draft.

Sam was signed to the Cowboys practice squad on September 3 after spending the preseason with St. Louis.

A statement from the Cowboys claimed that Sam was let go in order to make room for linebacker Troy Davis, who worked out with the team yesterday.
