Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum believes that the United States may be only “one generation away” from Christian persecution, telling an interviewer that there was even the distant threat of Nazi-style persecution.

Santorum gave an interview to the Christian Post to discuss his new documentary “One Generation Away.” He said the title comes from a Ronald Reagan quote: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

“If we don’t nip it here, then things get a lot worse,” Santorum said. “Persecution here in America is fairly mild. … It starts with a gradual erosion, you don’t usually go from 0 to 60 in a matter of a few days when it comes to religious persecution. It’s something that grows over time.”

Santorum compared the threat of religious persecution to the threat posed to Jews in the early days of the Nazi regime. “You wonder sometimes, ‘Why didn’t the Jews see this and move? Couldn’t they see it?’ It was unfathomable to them that a country like this could happen. Same thing here, you think it’s just impossible for that to happen in America. And maybe it is, but maybe it isn’t.”

“But what we do know is, that if we continue down this path, that things are not going to get better. And that the chance the something really bad beginning to happen, where your faith is really constrained, where you lives are really in danger, becomes a possibility down the road.”
