House Democrats ended Election Day controlling fewer seats than they have in nearly 80 years, but Nancy Pelosi isn’t conceding anything.
“I do not believe what happened the other night is a wave,” Pelosi said in her first sit-down interview since Democrats lost a dozen House seats to Republicans on Nov. 4. “There was no wave of approval for the Republicans. I wish them congratulations, they won the election, but there was no wave of approval for anybody. There was an ebbing, an ebb tide, for us.”
Hmm. So, um… an ebbing tide lowers all boats? Except for the ones captained by Republicans? Okay, that’ll work. What a great message to cheer up her base: “Don’t worry, it’s not that the other team is so great. They just suck slightly less than us!”
I’ve given up trying to figure out whether Pelosi and co. actually believe the ridiculous things they say. Is it doublethink, or is it just cynical rhetoric? Either way, they keep saying stuff that isn’t true, and we need to keep pointing it out. Just because it’s nothing new doesn’t mean it should be a matter of course.
Or, to put it in Pelosi-speak: I do not believe that the House Minority Leader is a demon from Hell.
