A major labor union released a series of television ads Tuesday urging Republicans not to shut down the government over the president’s executive action on immigration.

“On the eve of Republican-led discussions about whether to withhold funding and even shut down the federal government over the president’s bold immigration action, immigrant and working families are sending a message to senators: stand with immigrants and families over extremists,” a press release by the Service Employees International Union declared.

Their press release detailed that, “The Spanish-language ads will run in seven states: Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.”

Latino voters are called upon to contact their senators. The targets are Colorado Sen.-elect Cory Gardner and Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey.

The union urges Latinos to tell the senators, all Republicans, “to stand up for immigrant families.”

The ads featured a voice-over stating, “In the battle for immigration reform, President Obama took a bold step forward to keep our families together. But Republican politicians respond with more opposition.”

During a House Judiciary Committee meeting Tuesday, several scholars and legal experts argued that it was illegal for the president of the United States to unilaterally change immigration laws in this fashion.

Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, explained in his testimony, “Whether framed as an executive order or as mere ‘executive action ‘ in the form of so – called ‘prosecutorial discretion,’ President Obama’s recent action on immigration violates the Constitution.”
