A Georgia police chief shot his wife only a few hours into the new year, but he says it was an accident.

Peachtree City police chief William McCollom shot his wife in the bedroom of their Atlanta suburban home just after 4 a.m., CNN reports. After the shot injured his wife, McCollom called 911 and said it was an accident.

Initially McCollom told the 911 dispatcher that he had shot his wife twice, but investigators found that she had been shot once.

The police chief has not been charged in the incident as authorities investigate but is on administrative leave, NBC reports. The woman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

“The department is hurting at this point,” police spokesman Lt. Mark  Brown told CNN in a statement.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case because of the conflict of interest, Brown said in an online statement.

The bureau did not immediately return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
