The federal government is spending half a million dollars so doctors can practice talking to fat kids in virtual reality simulations.

The feds awarded $499,880 to SIMmersion LLC, a communication company, to develop a training program that will help doctors communicate with obese children using virtual simulations, The Washington Free Beacon reports.

The grant’s abstract points out that doctors can have a big impact in encouraging children to be healthier and getting the parents involved. But the feds and SIMmersion think doctors need a little help with “the talk.”

The solution? Virtual role-play simulations, of course.

“To target this gap, SIMmersion, together with Drs. Fulkerson, Sherwood, and Fleming, proposes to develop, evaluate, and disseminate a computer-based training system with role-play simulations to train health care providers to effectively conduct discussions with parents and children to provide intervention for and reduce the likelihood of progression to childhood obesity,” the report abstract states.

The simulations will feature three role-play situations, an onscreen coach, and a review to provide feedback.

The Center for Disease Control awarded the grant hoping to get parents motivated to make a change in their kid’s life. Let’s hope doctors can soon get access to this much-needed technology.
